The Year-By-Year Adventures Of Beady Eye’s Liam Gallagher

38-year-old Mancunian [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Liam Gallagher[/lastfm] is most infamous for his tenure as the “world’s greatest rock frontman” in the Britpop band [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Oasis[/lastfm]. In 2009, Liam and the rest of Oasis (minus his brother Noel) started a band called [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Beady Eye[/lastfm]–who are playing streaming a Live on Letterman concert from The Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on Wednesday, June 22 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.

To help prep you for the streaming show (which you can watch right here, by the way), let’s take a look back at how Liam got to where he is.

1991-1992:

  • Liam Gallagher starts a band called [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Rain[/lastfm] with mate Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan. The duo is so bad at songwriting that Liam invites his brother Noel Gallagher on board, to which Noel agrees as long as he can be the sole songwriter.
  • Liam then decided that the band should change its name to Oasis.

1994:

  • Oasis acquires a record deal with Creation Records.
  • The band releases its début album, Definitely Maybe, to critical acclaim with hit singles like “Supersonic” and “Live Forever.”
  • Definitely Maybe has been certified 7x Platinum in the United Kingdom and sold over 1 million copies in the United States. It continually appears on Best Album lists to date.
  • Oasis books their first American tour with Liam becoming a press favorite by changing the words of his brother’s songs to be offensive.
  • Liam and Noel have one of their first public brawls.
  • Noel leaves the tour.
  • While recording their sophomore album, Liam and Noel get into a huge fight in the studio because of conflict on who would sing lead vocals on certain tracks like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back In Anger.” Guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs calls Oasis’ management firm to “cancel” the album recording.
  • Three weeks later, the brothers had effectively reconciled to record What’s The Story, Morning Glory?

1995:

  • Oasis becomes one of the biggest bands in the world with the release of What’s The Story, Morning Glory? thanks to hit singles like “Champagne Supernova” and “Wonderwall.”
  • (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? is the third biggest-selling album in UK chart history–right behind [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Queen[/lastfm]’s Greatest Hits and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Beatles[/lastfm]’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
  • Liam kicks founding drummer Tony McCarroll out of Oasis after a fight.
  • Oasis starts a media fight with fellow, but musically very different, Britpop band, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blur[/lastfm].

1996:

  • Oasis played their first headline outdoor concerts at Maine Road Football Ground, Manchester in late April.
  • The band also played sold-out back-to-back concerts at Knebworth in August–the largest demand for a show in British history.
  • Liam pulls out of the groups MTV Unplugged performance citing a sore throat, but spent the entire show making fun of his brother’s singing.
  • Oasis starts to record their third album, Be Here Now, at prestigious studios like Abbey Road Studios.

1997:

  • Liam gets married to Patsy Kensit in April of 1997.
  • Because of an incident with a scone, Liam gets banned for life from an Australian airline.
  • Oasis releases their third album, Be Here Now, in August, which, by the end of 1997, had sold eight million units worldwide.

1998:

  • Liam has a daughter named Molly.

1999:

  • Oasis goes into the studio to work on their fourth album, Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants.
  • Two founding members–Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs and Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan–leave Oasis.
  • Liam writes his first song to be included on an Oasis album called “Little James,” written for his son and inspired by John Lennon’s “Beautiful Boy.”
  • Kensit, Liam’s wife, gives birth to Liam’s first son, Lennon Francis, in September.

2000:

  • Oasis releases Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants.
  • The album is the 16th fastest selling album in UK chart history, selling over 310,000 copies in its first week with singer-songwriter Ryan Adams calling Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants his favourite Oasis album.
  • During a tour in Barcelona, Liam fights with Noel (again) and Noel leaves the tour (again.)
  • Kensit and Liam get divorced.

2001:

  • Liam has a son named Gene with Nicole Appleton of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Appleton [/lastfm]and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]All Saints.[/lastfm]
  • Oasis worked on their fifth studio album while also touring.

2002:

  • Oasis releases their fifth studio album, Heathen Chemistry, which features three songs written by Liam.
  • Heathen Chemistry is the 11th biggest selling album of 2002 in the UK–selling a little over 800,000 copies.
  • Liam avoids a car accident his brother and other band mates are in, but in December, loses several of his teeth in a bar fight in Munich.

2003:

  • Liam reported that Oasis started recording their sixth album with producers, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Death in Vegas[/lastfm].

2004:

  • Liam starts a fathering war with Libertine’s singer, Pete Doherty, who fathered a child out-of-wedlock with vocalist Lisa Moorish. Liam accuses Doherty of not paying child support.

2005:

  • Oasis fulfills their full contract with Sony BMG and releases their sixth album called Don’t Believe The Truth. The album was immensely popular, reaching triple platinum in the UK. Liam also has three songs on this album.
  • Don’t Believe The Truth becomes #1 in its first week for UK Albums sales and becomes the 32nd fastest selling album ever in the UK.
  • Liam made huge contributions to the album which prompted brother Noel to say Don’t Believe The Truth is his favorite Oasis album because all members have contributed to it instead of just Noel.
  • The band goes on an almost year long huge world tour staring at London Astoria, with a rockumentary made about the tour.

2006:

  • Oasis releases a double compilation album of their hits called Stop The Clocks.
  • NME places Definitely Maybe third in a list of the greatest British albums ever–right behind[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] The Stone Roses[/lastfm] and The Smiths’ [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Queen Is Dead[/lastfm].

2007:

  • Oasis wins the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award at the BRIT Awards 2007.

2008:

  • Liam and Appleton get married on Valentine’s Day. He doesn’t invite Noel and claims in an interview that he has no relationship with his brother other than on stage.
  • In a 2008 poll by Q and HMV in 2008, Definitely Maybe was ranked first on a list of the greatest British albums of all time.

2009:

  • Oasis releases their final album Dig Out Your Soul (2008), finish their last tour, and Noel leaves the band (again). Except this time it’s for good.
  • The album sells 90,000 copies on its first day of release, making Dig Out Your Soul the second fastest selling album of 2008.
  • Oasis received the NME Award for Best British Band of 2009.
  • In November 2009, Liam announces that him and the remaining members of Oasis were starting–and recording–under the name Beady Eye.

2010:

  • In February, Oasis wins the award for Best Brit Album of the Last 30 Years at 2010 BRIT Awards for (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?.
  • In November, Beady Eye releases their first single called “Bright The Light.”
  • Liam was voted Best Rock Frontman from Q Magazine. In an interview, Liam compliments his brother Noel’s skills as a frontman.

2011:

  • Beady Eye releases their first commercial single, “The Roller,” in January of this year. Liam accuses his brother of stealing stuff for his solo album from past Oasis studio sessions.
  • The band’s début album, Different Gear, Still Speeding, releases in February.
  • Beady Eye headline a Japan Tsunami Disaster Relief Gig at O2 Academy Brixton in March, performing a cover of The Beatles’ “Across The Universe.”
